Hoist rope is a consumable with a defined discard criterion, yet it is routinely run until something looks obviously wrong. By then it has usually been unsafe for a while.

Three measurements

Count broken wires within one lay length and compare against the discard number for that rope construction. Measure actual diameter against nominal — a reduction beyond the permitted percentage means the core is failing. Inspect for core protrusion, birdcaging, and corrosion between strands.

Inspect where it works hardest

The section that sits over the boom head sheave at your most common working radius does the most cycles. That is where to look first, not at the drum end that never leaves the drum.

Record it

A dated rope inspection record is what your insurer and the factory inspector will ask for, and it is what tells you the replacement interval for the way you actually use the machine.
